Today, yet another Democrat has entered the already crowded field for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) has decided to seek his party’s nomination. He told the press his decision was delayed due to treatment for prostate cancer.

Bennet, a moderate Democrat and former Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, made his announcement this morning on CBS Morning. He cited two main reasons he’s chosen to run at this time. “One is the lack of economic mobility and opportunity for most Americans,” he said, “and the other is the need to restore integrity to our government.”

Bennet is a graduate of Yale law school, worked in the Clinton administration, as well as Republican billionaire, Phil Anschultz. He entered politics as the chief of staff for Democratic Mayor John Hickenlooper before becoming a senator. Hickenlooper is also running for president.

Although he opposes the Democratic demands for single payer health care, he also feels the country needs some kind of universal insurance options. “The idea that the richest country in the world hasn’t figured out how to have universal health care is beyond embarrassing. It’s devastating.”

Instead, Bennet proposes letting consumers buy into Medicare through insurance exchanges, arguing that that will be a more efficient and realistic path to universal coverage.

Bennet won his first election in 2010 defeating his Republican opponent on the subjects of gay rights and opposition to abortion, winning by a narrow margin. During his tenure as the chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Bennet has had contact with a network of wealthy donors which could help fun his presidential bid.

“I’m looking forward to running in 2020,” Bennet said. “[The cancer diagnosis] obviously was unexpected. But we caught it early. It’s something that I think we’re going to be able to treat. And I don’t think it should keep me off the trail.”
