New York’s state attorney general, Letitia James, announced an investigation into the NRA’s finances and non-profit status. James campaigned on the promise to investigate the organization, and issued subpoenas Saturday.
“The Office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James has launched an investigation related to the National Rifle Association (NRA),” spokeswoman Kelly Donnelly said in an email to the Associated Press. “As part of this investigation, the Attorney General has issued subpoenas.”
NRA attorney, William Brewer, said the group will fully cooperate with the investigation.
James, a Democrat, promised at a July campaign rally, “I will use the constitutional power as an attorney general to regulate charities, that includes the NRA, to investigate their legitimacy.”
The investigation comes at a time of discord within the organization. Yesterday, Lt. Colonel Oliver North (Ret.) announced he would not serve a second term as president. North and the executive VP, Wayne LaPierre, have disagreed on the direction for the organization since North joined last year. North unsuccessfully tried to remove LaPierre.
Democratic officials in NY, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, have repeatedly attempted to curb the political influence of the organization. Last year the NRA filed a lawsuit against the state and Gov. Cuomo after the state fined the insurance broker for the NRA insurance program, Carry Guard.
