What if you disguised a fundraiser for your campaign coffers as a 5k for the environment?

That’s exactly what Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did this past weekend. About 400 runners turned out in Astoria Park in Queens on Saturday for a 5K run. Ocasio-Cortez billed the run as to support her Green New Deal. The problem was, the participants didn’t realize their $30 entry fee went straight into the congresswoman’s campaign funds.

“We’re getting together for our own health, for our planet’s health … and to fight for the Green New Deal together,” the controversial congresswoman said before participants took off for the run. Even children were charged to participate, and a reduced $20 a head.

Reason for the 5K wasn’t clear

The vague wording on the fundraiser’s page didn’t mention the money wasn’t to help with promotion of the Green New Deal. “The Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 5K & 1K Kid Dash is a Family Fun Run supporting U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal on the Saturday following Earth Day,” the website touts.

Participants received a “limited editing” T-shirt for their donation.

But the fine print on the website, should the participant look that closely, admitted the money was a campaign “donation” rather than money to support Green New Deal promotion.

Fees went to campaign coffers

“Registration fees are contributions to AOC for Congress,” read the legal disclosure on aoc5k.com, which lists the Federal Election Commission rules that donors must follow.

When asked, AOC spokesman Corbin Trent confirmed, “It was a campaign fundraiser.”

The participants paid more than $11,000 all told. The issues stem from campaign contribution laws which state

Where did she break the law, other than lying about what the “donations” were for? The issue comes when the event charged $20 for children aged 3 and up. Federal campaign law says parents cannot donate to campaigns by way of children. Since the run was an admitted campaign fundraiser, that law was essentially broken.

One supporter was surprised to find out the event was actually a campaign fundraiser. “The site says it’s to benefit her environmental plan,” he complained. “If it is going to go directly to her campaign they should have said so.”
