Reaction to Rashida Tlaib’s Comments on Jews

Rep. Rashida Tlaib is receiving a lot of heat over comments she made regarding the Holocaust on Friday. On an episode of Yahoo’s podcast “Skullduggery,” Tlaib said she always felt a “calming effect” when thinking about the Holocaust.

On the pocast, Tlaib said, “It was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity. Their existence, in many ways, had been wiped out.”

She went on to say that this happened because her ancestors offered a “safe haven” to Jews escaping the Holocaust.

“I mean, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time.”

She added, “I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that [safe haven], in many ways.”

However, her recollection of the events of the time is incorrect. Palestinean leaders at the time supported Hitler in his extermination of the Jews. One in particular, Haj Amin al-Husseini, was the most prominent Arab collaborator with the Axis powers. Working with high ranking Nazi officials, he was involved in planning attacks against the Jews in Palestine. al-Husseini also assisted the German entry into North Africa, including the German entry into Tunisia and Libya. His espionage network provided the Wehrmacht with a forty-eight hour warning of the Allied invasion of North Africa.

House Republicans fired back at Tlaib’s comments, calling for House Leader Nancy Pelosi to take action against Tlaib. Online personalities also gave the freshman representative from Michigan  “dose of reality.”

“There is no justification for the twisted and disgusting comments made by Rashida Tlaib just days after the annual Day of Holocaust Remembrance,” said House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).
