The One World Trade Center was illuminated in pink Tuesday night to celebrate New York’s passage of a bill expanding abortion access up until birth, banning limitations on abortion the Supreme Court has established.
The law, the Reproductive Health Act, defines a person as “a human being who has been born and is alive,” erasing the state’s recognition of preborn babies older than 24 weeks as potential homicide victims. It also removes abortion from the penal code entirely and allows non-doctors to perform abortions.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States, calling the legislation a “historic victory for New Yorkers and progressive values.”
The governor then directed the One Trade Center, or Freedom Tower, be lit pink overnight. He also instructed the Alfred E. Smith Building in Albany, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, and the Kosciuszko Bridge to glow pink to “celebrate the achievement and shine a bright light forward the rest of the nation to follow.”
“I am directing that New York’s landmarks be lit in pink to celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow,” New York Gov. Andrew said in a Tuesday statement.

Cuomo additionally is working to pass a separate bill requiring insurance companies to provide free contraceptive care.
